pureThe Balinese Island was gotten more than 11,000 temples, Bali then had the nickname of the “1000 Temples Island”. The Besakih Temple was located at Besakih village, Rendang sub district, Karang Asem regency, Bali, around 25 km in north the Denpasar City. The Besakih Temple was one of the biggest temples that was regarded as the mother of the temple in Bali.

The Besakih Temple consisted of 22 temple buildings and was the place complex of group's Hindu religious duties. In the Besakih Temple often was held by various ritual sorts the Hindu religion.

Celebration that was most special in this temple was Ekadasa Rudra that is celebration one hundred Besakih Temple years that were held every time one hundred years very much. This Ekadasa Rudra celebration was the last time held during 1979.

The Besakih Temple was built was based on the concept of Tri Hita Karana, which is the concept of the balance between the Lord, humankind and nature. The available temples building was in this Besakih Temple organised was based on the points of the compass direction. These points of the compass direction as the symbol of available nature in this concept.

Each points of the compass direction were acknowledged as the Arena with the god of the ruler who was named the God of the Catur Lokapala. The Penataran Agung Besakih Temple was the center of the four points of the compass directions. This temple that was biggest and was aimed to worship the God Siwa. The Gelap Temple was in the east of the Penataran Agung Temple and was used to worship the God Iswara. On the south was gotten the Kiduling Kereteg Temple to worship the God Brahma. On the west was gotten the Ulun Kulkul Temple to worship the God Mahadewa, and that was last in the north was the Batumadeg Temple that was used to worship the God Wisnu.

The Besakih temple was located in foot Mount Agung, the highest mountain in Bali and it was considered as the holy mountain by the Balinese community. According to the community's Balinese story, the location of this temple was chosen because this area was considered holy. Because this Besakih Temple was considered holy, then tourists who wanted to enter this temple complex were obliged to wear the typical Balinese sarong. (oks)
